England Mayterm Mayterm | May 10*-June 19, 2027

Literature and Theatre England Mayterm

See England鈥檚 dynamic literary and theatrical history come to life in immersive contexts as we explore London, Oxford, Stratford-Upon-Avon, and the Lake District. This program offers cohort-based learning as we study historical, social, and religious foundations of English literature and drama, see plays performed, and speak with members of England鈥檚 vibrant theatre culture. Watch stories come to life and be transformed as we work, worship, and play in the natural and urban landscapes of writers in England from the Middle Ages to the present. *Please note that May 10-21 will be conducted fully online and can be done from anywhere; May 22 - June 19 we will be onsite in England. Applications are due

England Mayterm is designed for students from all majors and all years. This program will do more than just teach great literary and dramatic art in stunning locations: it will instill habits of mind that inform the formation of the self, how to relate to other people and communities, and what is possible as one engages with this wide world.

This Mayterm consists of 9 units: TA-001 Great Literature of the Stage, ENG-046 British Literature to 1800, and PEA-094 Adventuring in Literary Landscapes. The program allows students to earn up to four GEs (Reading Imaginative Literature, Working Artistically, Thinking Historically, and a PE credit), and it also fulfills credit for the English major and minor and Theatre Arts major and minor.

The program is open to all students, from first years to seniors, and it is designed for students who are interested in fulfilling most of their humanities GEs (Reading Imaginative Literature, Working Artistically, and Thinking Historically), and it also serves students who are interested in an English major or minor and/or a Theatre Arts major or minor.

Note that TA-001 and/or ENG-046 can be taken as upper-division courses with an approved project for students interested in earning upper-division credit (such as for an English major/minor or Theatre Arts major/minor). Reach out to Dr. McNamara and speak to your academic advisor about taking one or both of these classes for upper-division credit.

England Mayterm is open to any student (regardless of major or year). See the course descriptions for how the courses fulfill many of the General Education requirements for all students as well as requirements for English majors and minors and Theatre Studies majors and minors.
