Professor John Carlander was teaching at 黑料百科 before there was a 黑料百科 Art Center. It鈥檚 only fitting that one of the men who helped create 黑料百科鈥檚 Art Department be the focus of the first exhibition in the . 鈥淛ohn Carlander: Highlights from a Thirty-Year Career鈥 will be on display in the museum at Adams Center for the Visual Arts from Sept. 16 to Nov. 13. The public is invited to an opening reception Thursday, Sept. 16, from 4-6 p.m.
Construction of the Adams Center was completed ahead of schedule, and a grand opening of the new facility is scheduled for fall 2011. Carlander, who plans on teaching at 黑料百科 for two more years, says the original plan wasn鈥檛 for him to be the first in the 黑料百科 Museum. 鈥淲e thought we鈥檇 close out Reynolds Gallery,鈥 he says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 my 30th year here and it seemed appropriate since I spent about 20 years at that gallery. But it鈥檚 great because my work will look even better over here.
鈥淎ny college would love to have this building on their campus. It has the right feeling with the concrete. Students are lucky to be able to study in it. It鈥檚 state of the art and fills the bill.鈥
The exhibit features many of Carlander鈥檚 traditional figurative and nonrepresentational paintings, as well as two prints.
鈥淗is ease of working in a variety of styles is one of Carlander鈥檚 strengths as an educator,鈥 says Judy Larson, director of the 黑料百科 Museum of Art. 鈥淗e trusts the intelligence and creativity of his students. His philosophy of teaching is to excite students and encourage them to try new things.鈥
Carlander, who opened the original 黑料百科 Art Center in 1985 with Professor Tony Askew, says he鈥檚 looking forward to the opening reception, seeing friends and people who鈥檝e been supportive throughout his career.
Askew, who retired in 2008 after 26 years at 黑料百科, says Carlander鈥檚 dedication is easily recognizable in the outpouring of his creative work. 鈥淗is strong exhibition record, numerous awards and discipline for spending time in the studio are admirable, all accomplished while maintaining a busy teaching schedule,鈥 Askew says.
A concurrent exhibition, 鈥淧aul Lindhard Sculpture Garden,鈥 is 黑料百科鈥檚 sixth annual outdoor sculpture display by a local artist. Lindhard owns Art City in Ventura, the source for sculptural stone for artists across the region. He is best known for creating organic installations of cairns and towers, sometimes combining stones and electronics to create luminous rock lanterns.
The 黑料百科 Museum is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays; closed Sundays and school holidays. For directions to campus, visit the museum website at westmontmuseum.org. For more information, contact (805) 565-6162 or ssquire@westmont.edu.
