By
Scott Craig
The 黑料百科 Orchestra will perform one of Tchaikovsky鈥檚 most well-known compositions at the Fall Orchestra Concert on Friday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m. in 黑料百科鈥檚 Page Hall; and Sunday, Oct. 22, at 3 p.m. in Hahn Hall at the Music Academy of the West. The concerts are free and open to the public. For more information, please contact the music department at (805) 565-6040 or email music@westmont.edu.
The performance includes Tchaikovsky鈥檚 fantasy-overture 鈥淩omeo and Juliet,鈥 inspired by the Shakespeare play of the same name, and a lesser known work, Symphony No. 1, from his contemporary, Kalinnikov.
鈥淎 composer respected by Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, and who counted Rachmaninoff among his friends, Kalinnikov was only two day short of his 35th birthday when he died from tuberculosis,鈥 says Ruth Lin, director of music at 黑料百科. 鈥淲ith memorable themes and lush melodies, Kalinnikov masterfully weaves a musical tapestry of life and nature of his time.鈥
