Student Musicians to Shine in November

黑料百科 student musicians and composers show off their talents at six free concerts this month. For more information, please contact theat (805) 565-6040.

The Composer鈥檚 Concert, highlighting original works by 黑料百科 student composers and performed by students and the composers, is Friday, Nov. 11, at 7 p.m. in Deane Chapel on 黑料百科鈥檚 lower campus.

The Veteran鈥檚 Day Concert, featuring inspirational patriotic music, is Saturday, Nov. 12, at 2 p.m. in the Santa Barbara Veteran鈥檚 Memorial Building, 112 West Cabrillo Blvd. This event is presented by the Pierre Claeyssens Veterans Foundation.

The Vocal Chamber Concert will feature the 黑料百科 Chamber Singers, a select ensemble drawn from the 黑料百科 Choir, on Sunday, Nov. 13, at 4 p.m. in Deane Chapel. The chamber singers will perform the sacred classics 鈥淎doramus te鈥 and 鈥淐antate Domino鈥 by Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643) and contemporary sacred and secular selections, including 鈥淰idi aquam鈥 by Iain Quinn and 鈥淭he Tree of Song鈥 by Stephen Chatman. The concert will include the Kenyan folk song 鈥淗ombe鈥漚rranged by Laz Ekwueme and the Beatles 鈥淎nd I Love Her鈥 arranged by Bob Chilcott, and Christmas songs 鈥淛esus, Jesus, Rest Your Head鈥 arranged by Arthur Warrell, and 鈥淕audete鈥 by Steven Sametz. Grey Brothers, professor of music, conducts the chamber singers, which include Laura Coors, Bethany Le, Michelle Vera, Serena Lee, Chelsie Sen, Jon Lindsley, Jason Tong, Alex Dill and Sean McElrath.

The Jazz Concert, under the direction of John Douglas, is Wednesday, Nov. 16, at 8 p.m. in Deane Chapel. The concert features vocal selections 鈥淢oon River,鈥 鈥淟a Vie En Rose,鈥 鈥淥ld Devil Moon,鈥 鈥淭hem There Eyes,鈥 鈥淎in鈥檛 Nobody Here But Us Chickens鈥 and 鈥淵ou鈥檝e Got a Friend in Me.鈥

Instrumentals by the jazz ensemble include Latin-jazz interpretations of Vince Guaraldi鈥檚 鈥淐ast Your Fate to the Wind鈥 and Mongo Santamaria鈥檚 鈥淐ome Candela,鈥 and pianist Jay Real鈥檚 original composition, 鈥淐ity Samba.鈥 Jazz-rock selections include Weather Report鈥檚 鈥淏irdland鈥 and David Sanborn鈥檚 arrangement of Stanley Turrentine鈥檚 jazz hit, 鈥淪ugar.鈥 Rounding out the program are challenging bop classics such as Dizzy Gillespie鈥檚 鈥淪alt Peanuts鈥 and Clifford Brown鈥檚 鈥淛oy Spring.鈥 The ensemble features Shanna Cooley on vocals, Real on violin and piano, Kalena Ungos on flute, Stephen Ziliotto and Josh Acuna on trumpet, Chris Fedderson on clarinet and tenor sax, John Butler on guitar and bass, Leal Makaroff on piano and percussion, and Westin Byerly on drums.

The String Chamber Concert, featuring top string student musicians performing works by Bach, Grieg, Mendelssohn and Mozart, is Friday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m. in Deane Chapel.

The Chamber Orchestra and Wind Chamber Concert is Sunday, Nov. 20, at 3 p.m. in Deane Chapel. The Brass Quintet will perform selections by Handel and Bizet. The Wind Quintet will play selections of Handel鈥檚 鈥淲ater Music,鈥 arranged by Kennedy/Kaisershot. The Chamber Orchestra will conclude the concert with an American folk hymn, pieces by Handel, Vivaldi and Ralph Vaughan Williams and an arrangement of Coldplay鈥檚 鈥淰iva la Vida.鈥
