Talk Examines Women, Christian Higher Ed

Lauren Winner, assistant professor of Christian spirituality at Duke Divinity School, delivers a lecture, 鈥淏eyond the Calm Waters: Some Musings on Women and Christian Higher Education,鈥 on Wednesday, March 9, at 3:30 p.m. in Hieronymus Lounge at 黑料百科鈥檚 Kerrwood Hall. Winner writes and lectures widely on Christian practice, the history of Christianity in America, and Jewish-Christian relations. She is an Episcopal priest and vicar of St. Paul鈥檚 Episcopal Church in Louisburg, N.C.

鈥淚鈥檒l reflect on some of the challenges posed to women in Christian higher education and some of the opportunities women have in the landscape of Christian higher education,鈥 says Winner. 鈥淲e鈥檒l also talk, among other things, about ambition and envy, and also about Thomas Aquinas and, possibly, Prince Charming.鈥

Winner has appeared on PBS鈥檚 Religion & Ethics Newsweekly and has served as a commentator on NPR鈥檚 鈥淎ll Things Considered.鈥 She has written for the New York Times Book Review, the Washington Post Book World, Publishers Weekly, Books and Culture, and Christianity Today, and her essays have been included in several volumes of The Best Christian Writing.

Her books include 鈥淕irl Meets God,鈥 鈥淢udhouse Sabbath,鈥 鈥淎 Cheerful and Comfortable Faith,鈥 鈥淪till: Notes on a Mid-Faith Crisis鈥 and 鈥淲earing God.鈥 She is currently completing a book called 鈥淐haracteristic Damage,鈥 which examines the effects of sin and damage on Christian practice.
